Sir Moses Montefiore (1784–1885) was a British Jewish financier, philanthropist and community leader who devoted much of his life to helping Jewish communities around the world. He made several visits to the Land of Israel and supported projects in education, health, agriculture and Jewish settlement. In Jerusalem, he is particularly remembered for helping establish Mishkenot Sha'ananim, one of the first Jewish neighborhoods built outside the Old City's walls, and for the famous windmill that bears his name. Montefiore also had a direct connection to the area of today's Tel Aviv. In 1855, he purchased land and an orchard on the outskirts of Jaffa; the area later developed into the Montefiore neighborhood of Tel Aviv. The street sign therefore represents more than simply a location. It connects a contemporary Tel Aviv street to the history of one of the most influential Jewish philanthropists of the 19th century.
